>> For hundreds of years, the amendment process was effective. It no longer is.

That's an absurd remark. Outside the Bill of Rights the Constitution has been amended 17 times in its history. It isn't supposed to be done on a monthly basis.

But the idea that one party or one person can declare the amendment process dead because it doesn't suit your particular ideology is silly. The idea is that if states are going to be bound by amendments to their unifying document, there has to be some kind of agreement as to what those amendments will be. Right now the political environment is such that it would be difficult.

I support amending the Constitution through legal means; I think there are some things we need to do at this time to preserve the Constitution (e.g., term limits, repeal of the 17th, and I would like to see the 16th repealed and replaced with a NST).

But let me ask you a serious question. Assume you could get 3 amendments. What changes would you like to see?

It has nothing to do with my ideology. The amendment process is dead because this nation is very divided. There is no way any amendment would ever get approved these days. You know the pledge of allegiance where it says 'one nation, undivided'..........its all BS now. We are as divided as we were before the Civil War. People up here who don't have a political bone in their bodies complain openly about the right....and now have started dissing the South. You all are so consumed with hate and anger I don't think you realize the effect its having on the rest of the country. The atmosphere is so poisoned nothing positive is likely to happen. Frankly, I don't even care any more. The country I loved no longer exists.

Excellent question. Off the top of my head I can imagine three which would involve changing some of what currently exists.

The right to conscientious self expression, association, and profession individually or corporally shall not be infringed upon.

The right of an individual to act in self defense against any threat, whether it be direct or indirect shall not be infringed upon; including the rights to remain silent, express opposition in speech or action, to engage advocacy on their behalf, to engage others as a defense force, or to take up arms in defense.

The right to encourage others to do well and be well in relationship to other human beings in consideration of their individual well being and as encouragement involves a social obligation to contribute to the goodness of society.

Dave, YOU'VE given up on amendments! That's why you were pimping that ridiculous "Convention of States" crap a while back. How's that going?

......I could go along with those 3............the reason I'd might favor a balanced budget amendment is that it might be easier for our idiot electorate to understand and back. Public support for repeal of the 17th may be tough.
