The brutality wasn't the issue, although they were brutal.

The problem was that it was necessary to apply pressure to the leadership. And the reality is that sometimes it is necessary for that pressure to come from within. While we have gone the extra mile since Vietnam to make our wars as humane as practical, sometimes it is necessary to kill a lot of people to make that pressure build.
