Well, since you addressed your query to me, I'll tell you my experience. I have Eschwab. Owned mucho AOL puts during October "whateveryawannacallit" Puts worth great $$$. Couldn't get through. By the time I could get through, several hours later, puts worth about 35K less. ouch. held onto 'em and a few days later sold 'em for about 50K more. Un ouch. Fate was good to me, Eschab wasn't. About the best suggestion I've heard is to have an online broker you can physically get to in a reasonable amount of time, knock down all the little old ladies standing in front of you, (apollogies in advance to offended lol's), Belly up to that counter, and PUT THAT ORDER IN. And you don't care if their server's down, maybe take a tape recorder with you. (Sorry, that's the l*wy*r in me)

Unless you're in a city, (I'm not) seems like there's no good answer. I don't think ANY of the onlines have sufficent capacity to handle a rush like in October, and I'll bet none of 'em upgraded enough to handle Monday's.....(oops, did I say Monday, I should qualify that to Monday or Tuesday's, perhaps as late as Wednesday..., but BWDIK and all that stuff, GGG),

RE: Brokers you can get to in fast market conditions, for options (especially, but also for stocks), I have had first or second ring answers from my broker for years, and quick fills -- even on "Grey Monday". They are ED & F Man in Chicago (800-437-8709). I don't know of any on line trading which would be trustworthy, especially on a big down day. Hope this helps. You may e mail me for any other info if you wish, or post it for all.

Jack

Big guy: re brokerages: I have been looking for a new broker to get out of e-schwab. The only firm open during downer monday was quick and reilly, and their new Suretrade system is designed by the same folks. It should be a good bet. There's a local Waterhouse office I can walk to, so I'm moving to Waterhouse, I'll reconsider Suretrade if the snailmail application I requested twice two weeks ago ever shows sup.
