And Soft Machine was a better band than all bands I saw mentioned. Soft Machine truly subverted the elements it drew from. Far more influential than given credit. Not given nearly enough credit. I think the hip hop remixers are nothing... That genre is nearly devoid of anything of worth. A nearly pure example of pandering strictly for money. There are exceptions of course. I'm almost always interested only on the progenitors, like Sugar Hill Gang, even in the rough they are usually far more interesting, but usually make less money precisely because they don't pander. John Cooper Clark and Linton Kwesi Johnson were both doing poetry to music before the famous rappers. Most of the entertainment he lists I find boring. WUV the first season of Star Trek, 2 & 3 have their moments, hate almost every other Star Trek. Hate vampire movies. Star Wars is the worst ever, horrible, absurd, garbage pandering. My favorite art, music and movies are almost always films that cannot be put into genres. I'm looking for the true original creatives because... they are the people who have the best understanding of the art form and culture they live in. Since they understand it so well they understand how and why its important to constantly subvert cultural assumptions, but it has to swing. Ellington understood seduction is part of it. You can't change an attitude or educate an ear, until you seduce the listener. That's the only reason to pander to audiences, sucker them in then deliver what they don't know they want, an education from an expert. Steely Dan is also a name coined by Burroughs. I like to joke no one has ever read Naked Lunch all the way through, except Alan Ginsberg... Burroughs was not too good at seduction. Same with Ornette Colman. Miles Davis once said "All you have to do is listen to know that guy is all fucked up."
