Not to mention prize winning economists! I don't if the guy ever was an actuary, and that certainly doesn't imply understanding of Social Security. In particular, the accounting for SS is vastly different from the accounting for a private pension, which is one reason it is in the mess it is in. It seems to me that the actuarial work in SS is pretty straightforward. But I've yet to encounter a liberal who understands the accounting for it.
