He "did it" in that he raised wages. What he didn't do was gain profitability through the mechanism of paying more to create more demand for his vehicles. Any additional demand would have been tiny compared to the additional costs.

So why did he increase wages. Probably largely to reduce turnover, and to be able to be slightly more selective in hiring. (factors that wouldn't be there to any great extent if every company raised wages, for example because of a higher minimum wage). Also it enabled him to exert control over his employees lives, since the extra pay was in bonuses that required going along with Ford's social agenda to an extent.

>> He did MORE than just "say it".

He said it totally as a salesman.

The reality is that the raise came for one reason only: He couldn't keep his assembly line running with sick-outs and no-shows.

The Ford raise was 100% a product of free markets at work. The comment he made was putting a public face on it without saying, "I had to or we'd have been unable to produce cars."

And there is proof of this fact.

Ford was an intelligent individual and no intelligent individual would conclude that you could make more money by paying your workers more so they could by more of YOUR PRODUCT. That is an inherently stupid argument that it is self-evident Ford would never have believed.
