Religion follows the economy. Historically, during hard economic times there is an upsurge in religion. During good economic times religion is de-emphasized. Davidson and Rees-Mogg explored this subject in their fine treatise, The Great Reckoning.

Religion doesn't cause economic change, it results from it.

Koan,
Central America has religion and little education and the Scandinavian countries have education and little religion. Which region is doing the best?
The United States of America has religion and the best education in the world.

The United States of America is doing the best out of all three regions.

I think that says it all.
