Multifunction print products seen doubling by 2001. report follows. regards

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec 15 (Reuters) - The U.S. market for
personal machines that offer a combination of printing, fax,
copying or scanning is expected to double to $1.4 billion in
2001 from an estimated $732 million, according to Dataquest.
The market research arm of Gartner Group Inc. said in a
report released Monday that the number of units shipped is
expected to jump nearly three-fold to more than 3.6 million in
2001 from an estimated 1.39 million this year.
Andrew Johnson, senior industry analyst for Dataquest's
Facsimile and Multifunctional Products North America program,
said the value of the market for supplies for these machines was
"easily half again as much" in sales figure terms.
"A lot of what this market is about is supply revenue," he
said, adding color multifunction machines can provide color
copier capabilities, making them even greater output devices.
"Color will surpass the monochrome next year in terms of
units," he added. Dataquest did not release figures on the
market share held by various companies.

Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP), Canon Inc. (TOKYO:7751), Xerox (NYSE:XRX),
Brother (TOKYO:6448) and Sharp Corp (TOKYO:6753)
