On the subject of Microsoft lobbying, a choice quote I left out of yesterday's NYT article: nytimes.com

Microsoft executives have often expressed the view -- in tones that ranged from sincere to condescending to belligerent -- that the more Washington understands about the software industry, and its special attributes, the more the government will be persuaded to leave Microsoft alone so it can push ahead, unfettered, to continue producing great products, rich shareholders and satisfied customers.

Yeah, well, I can't claim to understand "the software industry and its special attributes", as determined by Microsoft , and I know all about rich shareholders, but I also know about some dubious products and unsatisfied customers. Totally aside from condescending lectures about software technology as only Microsoft understands and delivers it, somewhat in contrast to software technology as seen by all those egghead CS types and anybody who knows anything about computers beyond the IBM PC and the Microsoft products that lord over it. Maybe MSFT is late to the lobbying game, but they're certainly not late to the PR game. And they got enviable skills in the Orwellian doublespeak department that should serve them well. Too bad about that independent minded judge and his independent minded special master. We'll se how it plays out.

Cheers, Dan, whose's just a little miffed today about all the wonders of Windows setup and administration he's discovered or rediscovered in the last few days. I'd sort of forgotten why I hated the reformat, reinstall drill so much...
