GM,

I could care less that my Zip Plus can't read a 3 1/2 inch floppy. As a physician, I give lectures frequently. I use Powerpoint and save my files onto my Zip drive and take my Zip drive to work. I plug it into our laptop which plugs into our Infocus projector and I'm done. If the laptop Zip were out for my Hyperdata Laptop, I'd have one of those too. I use 3 1/2 inch floppies for coasters. If I buy software, it usually comes on a CD. 3 1/2 is dead and buried.

>>>Leo and all, re backward compatibility...
Nobody has complained that backward compatibility
to 5 1/4 inch floppies has been lost.<<<

Ahem...for awhile, computers shipped WITH BOTH drives to make sure that compatibility was present. Only when the market was ready (vast majority of users using only 3.5 floppies) were 5.25 drives finally dropped.

Zip is used by about 5% of computer users. This is not indicative of a format that the market is swarming to. Sales are impressive for a low end peripheral, but do not indicate a format that will be "standard."

Iomega has had more than 2 years to try and make Zip standard. With its low installed base percentage and low OEM inclusion, it has failed.

When a CEO such as KE claims "we are now the standard," that has about as much credibility as Bill Gates saying thsat MSN is the standard over AOL. That is, none. CEO's have a vested interest in making their company's position better than it really is. I shouldn't have to explain this concept to any of you. The newswires are full of CEO's claiming this and that. The sad fact is that Zip sales have leveled out. After this 4th Q, the revenue drop will be even more dramatic than last year. The Iomaniacs only saving grace is the often-delayed Vapor! 40MB (hah hah) drive. This little battery drainer reminds me of several past product introdutions. The Edsel and RCA Videodisc come to mind.

Anyhoo, after the price drop next year, I may buy in at a post-split price of $5. Iomega is sure to still be a player in the removable drive market even when Orb and SparQ relegate Jaz to the bargain bins next to LS-120.
