That's exactly right. In Asian countries, the entire family, and especially the kids themselves, realize that it's a dog eat dog world early on. They KNOW they have to compete against other kids for the best education from the time they enter kindergarten. They go to school the entire year, and devote many hours outside of school to learning, because they know other kids and other families are doing the same.

In a globalized world, the kids above compete with our kids, and it's no contest. We lose.

In my clan we are not as driven as the Asians. We think we can get the same result with persistence.

We pace ourselves for the long run. We take our vacations and mess around and can do so because we are all going to do this our entire lives.

We don't try and cram it into a short time period.

We teach education as integral to our lives (like eating breakfast every day) , so we learn day after day after day, but with an easy lope like a cross country runner.

Asians are often sprinters and too often single minded. Which I saw you referred to.

But in their defense they have a gun at their head i.e. monster competition. We have the luxury of not having the problem.

And so ironically, our edge over Asians is, IMO, the fact we value l(and have time for) liberal arts.

Liberal arts is the big picture.

If I could force right wingers to learn one subject, it would be history.
