Guys, here's a good thread that is always active on MSFT topics. Not that I mind talking about it here, but this thread has MSFT and NSCP employees present at times. There is always up to the minute news being posted there too.

I'm with you on this one, jhild. Microsoft has a self-created opportunity to shove IE down consumers throats via 'browser/OS integration' claims, whereas Netscape does not, nor could ever hope to have that opportunity.

As of now, a Dell or Micron box doesn't require a browser to operate, so Microsoft's 'integration' defense doesn't hold much water for me. It is not an 'emipirical fact' that Netscape couldn't create their own OS and do the same thing, nonetheless using general wisdom it is fair to say that it can't happen.

At such point in time that an IE browser is required to operate a Wintel box, will we say that Microsoft did this not necessarily out of loving concern for enhancing the user's experience, but as one more step to keeping sheep in the death grip?

Cabletron May Announce Acquisition of Yago Systems, Paper Says

Rochester, New Hampshire, Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Cabletron
Systems Inc. may announce the acquisition of Yago Systems Inc. as
early as this week, the Boston Globe reported, citing
unidentified industry sources. Start-up Yago makes advanced
routing devices for computer systems that are speedier and cost
less than similar devices made by Cisco Systems Inc. Cabletron
doesn't make its own routers and already owns a small stake in
Sunnnyvale, California-based Yago, said the Globe, which didn't
provide any comment from the companies on the likelihood of the
transaction.

Last month, Cabletron agreed to buy Digital Equipment
Corp.'s networking equipment business for $430 million to gain
customers overseas and in the fast-growing telecommunications
market.

President Clinton Creates New Government Department of Computerization.

Clinton says need of a Government Dept. to oversee the Computer Industry was inevitable.

WASHINGTON D.C.--(BULLSHI_T WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1997-President Clinton today announced the creation of a new Government Dept., the "Department of Computerization", which will be charged with the responsibility to oversee the Infrastructure of Computing within the U.S. and it's possessions, in particular the... Operating Systems, Software, Hardware and for the Internet, Intranets, Extranets and the WWW.

What has surprised the Computer Industry and Government Insiders the most, is that the person to take charge of this new department will be non-other than Bill Gates, from Microsoft.

President Clinton in announcing Gates as the Secretary of Computerization said he is the natural choice for the position since Gates is one of a very few who have taken on Janet Reno "head to head". Gates has stomped on her toes and lived to tell about it said the President, he went on to say Billy Gates now owns the deed to the Lincoln bedroom...the Oval Office...Air Force One & Two along with other items the President refused to commit on. However on last report Hillary was reported to be leaving for Redmond , Washington.

Al Gore when asked for a comment wnet on rambling about.... cutting-edge technology in VPNs, tunneling, encryption, information super highway, bandwidth management, firewall security, DOOM & DOOM II, along with Duke Nukeum, and routing in a single hardware platform.

When leading executives and engineers in the networking industry were asked about their thoughts in regards to this event they said everything from Ah Shit to Oh Fuc_! Some of the companies were-- Bay Networks (NYSE:BAY -), Forrester Research (NASDAQ:FORR -), 3Com (NASDAQ:COMS -), Raptor (NASDAQ:RAPT -), and Shiva (NASDAQ:SHVA -).
