doug, nice explanation of the technical and economic issues! You have a possible 2nd career opportunity at hand (RF For Dummmies?).
As to the trifling little economic matters we face: I couldn't agree with you more completely re: volatility, it's gonna be big time. Practically every day of the week is scheduled for major economic news announcements. Tuesday should be a real hummer with Fed open market's committee on interest rates and Japan outlining their economic reform game plan.
I hear what you're saying about trading into that but I don't know enough to do it and don't think next week is a good starting point for rookies!
Quantifying the cost of the Q's Korea ding (or Asia ding) is of course the right approach at this juncture. Last week, the market said "don't know what it is but it's negative, sell". My optimistic thrust is that folks will now begin to do what you have done and ask if this is nickel/dime or is it fifty cents? Of course no one knows the answer at this point and the market hates uncertainty which makes me think that we won't get a sharp rebound--I'm hoping for some rocky basing with a gradual turn to the upside in a month which assumes that the Asian politicians get their acts together.
I am not likely to abandon "buy and hold", but this experience and q-dog's yapping have convinced me that the tech stocks need to be purchased when blood is running in the streets, and I think the nasty pooch is also right when he is prepared to sell when the story has been
played out or valuations have become excessive on the upside. I don't know about puts and calls but I don't think marriage to these babies is called for--more like intermediate term "relationships". Best, Mike Doyle
