<<When Checkfree grows up, what companies will it most be like?>>

Great question!

The first one I came up with was Federal Express....not a perfect analogy, but the similarities are:

1. Competes against the US Postal Service.
2. Offers one very specialized service with time and cost saving attributes.
3. Does not attempt to use its specialty as a platform from which to sell additional services to its customers or their customers; Respects and protects the relationship between its customers and their end customers (something Bill Gates has not done!)
4. Has large startup, infrastructure, and economy of scale aspects that prevent easy competitor entry.
5. Will attain a utility-like presence with its customers, who will build their sales and service offering around the capability and quality of this trusted and reliable vendor.

IMO,

Brian

Brooks, I am very long in CKFR myself, my #1 holding. I believe the peers of CKFR should be other Internet stocks, such as Yahoo, Mindspring, AOL, CyberCash, Checkpoint Software, etc. The proper index should be Isedx. We can't compare CKFR with Coke or Gillete. CKFR's business is in a brand new era that is expected to grow exponentially during the next few years. Besides its earning, there should be an option value here with CKFR. In other words, CKFR deserves some extra value above its normal PE ratio based on growth. Hope that helps.

When compared with other Internet stock, I feel CKFR is a value play. Yet it has a dominating market share advantage. JMO.

<<<<<<<Coke, for sure. Gillette, absolutely.

......i agree with you about coke, gillette, and maybe tobacco companies. the most similare company is, i am sorry to say, microsoft! the problem with comparing it to internet stocks is that they will have competition.

......like the above brands, ckfr has a lock on 75% of the banks and therefore has name recognition, loyalty and brand awareness that other internet companies will drool over. look at all of the companies trying to get into software, ISP, search engines, softwareetc.

..... i would see ckfr as a smaller, gentler microsoft in their niche. no other company has such a lock on the eyeballs as msft and ckfr, except that we are getting our kinder gentler microsoft when it is just starting to develop.

......and i agree with you this is no trading stock!!!!!!!
