Arnie:

I am not sure how old the CDMA data is I have been digesting, if I have some details backwards, I would hope George would correct me. There is no question from what I see so far that CDMA would provide additional capacity for a given band of RF. And for the masses using cellular, this is a must as loading continues to increase. However for Nextel, I need to do more research on the number of channels they have per site. I seriously doubt they would give any real thought to switching now. Switch systems now, yea right!

Nextel has been converting many of those 5 channel Motorola SMR sites to TDMA sites (I am sure that many of these sites have more than 5 channels. A channel is 30 kHz wide and each channel carries 6 conversations (or 3 telephone type calls). AMPS actually uses 2 channels per conversation(one going out and one coming in (there is also a 3 freq. that sends control data).

So then, TDMA can carry 6 cellular type when compared directly to AMPS channel requirements (2 TDMA channels can carry 6 "full duplex" conversations). If you look at TDMA in the direct connect mode, it can carry 12 conversations (simplex) compared to the 2 channels AMPS uses to conduct one conversation. Given 6 to 1 and 12 to 1 additional capacities of TDMA over AMPS (Analog Cellular), I would think Nextel is off to a good start regarding capacity. I need to get facts strait from the horses mouth next Wed. AM. I need to find out the number of channels they have on a typical site.
