They bought Tesla's not because they don't have to pay for any gas tax.

Well that's putting a pretty fine point on it

Pretty sure one of the most significant reason for most folks to buy Tesla's is the avoidance of the necessity to purchase gasoline...the cost of which includes the gas tax

Personally, if I could, I'd buy an S for the 0-60 acceleration alone

I needed a 550hp CTS-V @ about 10 miles per gallon to match that

But I think the point is as you say, they are a fine commuter car, but if you want to drive someplace, like the way the vast majority of Americans use their cars to do, you need to think twice about that

I was impressed with a 300 mile battery vehicle, and think that might have potential, if they have some degree of success with locating the fast charging stations at strategic points

If they were to put one in Yuma, Arizona, I'd seriously consider such a vehicle cause then I could drive to San Diego or Los Angeles

But I can't make a utilitarian case for a second car at this point so with those range limitations, even at 300 miles, I can't justify an EV

Obviously any vehicle as range limited as 200 miles is strictly aimed at those folks who aren't planning on using it to leave their own city limits pretty much
