True. Call me when they "get" Duke Ellington and Mozart, or start listening to Asmus Tietchens or Dieter Moebius.

Indie rock and Alt rock used to be indie and alt at one point in time. The record companies are really REALLY good at co-opting underground music. They missed the boat first on the Hippie underground (LP revolution) and later on DIY and Punk, but they've learned their lesson well.

Its a haystack of mediocrity and pandering out there. I'm constantly looking for the needle and rarely finding anything that is really good.

Really it doesn't matter. The vast majority of consumers don't know anything about music. They don't have time for it. Other forms of entertainment are just as important to them and compete for their time. They just want something with a pleasant hook and a simple meter/rhythm. The algorithms will be fine for them. Listening and understanding Mozart takes a lot of effort. Very few people want to put in the time to understand and hear what he can do with sound.

The people who are fanatical collectors are obsessive and they've always been a tiny minority of the music buying public.

They are people like me who go to see Fibonaccis who are on the bottom of a bill, meet the band and find out they are the only two people at the show who showed up to see the
