Calgary's Naheed Nenshi becomes Canada's first Muslim mayor

Mayoral candidate Naheed Nenshi celebrates his election win at his campaign office. (Chris Bolin/Chris Bolin for The Globe and Mail)

If you don't know the name Naheed Nenshi, take note.

A grassroots campaign driven by volunteers has delivered Canada its first Muslim mayor - Mr. Nenshi, who scored a staggering win in Calgary's mayor's race Monday.

He defeated two better-funded candidates, including one backed by Stephen Harper's campaign team, and saw his support surge in the final few weeks. To say Mr. Nenshi's campaign was austere is understatement - he delivered his speech in a basement that was donated by a supporter at the last second.

The 38-year-old Mr. Nenshi survived a smear campaign and a telephone failure in the crucial final days and hours, before running away with what was to be a close vote. His candidacy was branded the "Purple Revolution," named for his campaign colour and driven by a broad demographic that included strong youth support. He achieved what many observers thought impossible - a wonkish, even dorky, academic and visible minority elected to the helm of what is often called Canada's most conservative city after a campaign driven by charisma and sheer determination.

"Today Calgary is a different place than it was yesterday. A better place," Mr. Nenshi said in a speech to his supporters.

Shortly after 10 p.m. local time, CTV declared him the winner. Global News followed suit an hour later.

When returns finally showed him in the lead - one he would not relinquish - a bar where Mr. Nenshi was watching results erupted in a deafening cheer.

"The bar was amazing," a grinning Mr. Nenshi told The Globe and Mail as he walked into his campaign office. "If you have never heard the sound of a city collectively losing its mind, you needed to be in that bar."

He said his win "means we've got a lot of work to do, starting tomorrow [Tuesday]" and that he was "a little" surprised with how many votes he received.

"It means people heard my message," he said.

There is a sickness festering in Calgary, Alberta

If Calgary does not come down hard on each of these provocateurs, and probe into the behaviour of the police, we will find ourselves overwhelmed like the streets of Paris

By Diane Weber Bederman July 22, 2014
canadafreepress.com

On Friday July 18, a Pro-Palestinian demonstration took place in Calgary. The organizer of this event was the University of Calgary student club “Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights” whose current president Ala’a Hamdan recently said “My body and soul are ready to fight and die,” and “This land will be proud that Palestinian babies are born men and women ready to spill their blood.” In a fictional battle hymn written to a son, Ms. Hamdan also wrote: “I will soak a koffiah with your blood and save it to show to your siblings ... I will be named the mother of the martyr.” Featured speaker at the anti-Israel rally was Alberta Liberal MLA Darshan Kang who will be running for the federal Liberal Party .

According to media reports, particularly from Ezra Levant, the appropriate officials in Calgary were informed that more than 700 people would be descending onto the downtown core-near city hall. The mayor himself received an invitation. The authorities were also informed that a small group, about 10, pro-democracy activists (Jews and non-Jews) would be on location standing up for Israel, our sister democracy.

Apparently, there were no police at this point and according to Levant none showed after a 911 call was made. The more than 700 hundred Pro- Palestinian demonstrators appeared to be miffed by the presence of 10 pro-democracy supporters and decided to not only verbally abuse but physically attack. This demonstration turned quickly into a mob attack.

Why did the police not attend such a potentially volatile protest from the beginning? I can think of two reasons. One, underneath the thin veneer of civility there is anti-Semitism. Understandable as anti-Semitism is a 2000 year old cultural meme that is deeply embedded in the DNA of far too many souls.

Or, this is Calgary’s way of interpreting diversity, tolerance, inclusion and accommodation. And I can understand that as well. Pierre Trudeau introduced multi-culturalism into Canada. That word was an error, a misnomer. We are a uni-culture country: Western culture. And somewhere along the way to diversity our desire to be accommodating became conflated with tolerating everything in the name of inclusiveness. Canada, like all western nations, is a culture rooted in and defined by ethical monotheism, the Judeo-Christian ethic that is welcoming to all cultures and faiths, but not necessarily open to all rituals, beliefs and customs. Many of them clash with our western values: honour killing, stoning of women, sex selection abortion, “eye for an eye” justice that includes amputating of limbs for stealing. Nor do we accept the concept of dhimmitude or a caste system- a hierarchy of human value.

The protestors who turned violent seemed to feel entitled to attack, to choke, to beat down. It’s alleged that seven people were attacked: a 20 year old was dragged from the neck by an Israeli flag; a 19 year old boy had his shirt, emblazoned with a Star of David, ripped off. He was bitten and suffered a concussion. A Christian man was also attacked. And then there were two women. One was a 120 pound 22 year old girl Samantha Hamilton, who was kicked on the ground; another was a 52 year old woman recovering from abdominal surgery who was hit in the stomach. Both women were attacked by “men.” (I use quotes because in my world, in my upbringing, men do not beat down women) And there were so many against one. These are not men. These are bully cowards, wusses. It is also alleged that individuals standing around the immediate area of the assault were yelling “kill the Jews”, “Hitler should have finished the job” and “Hitler was right.”

When these barbarians are identified and tried and found guilty of assault, I expect my country to deport any who are not citizens of Canada. I expect the authorities to take them to the airport and put them on the first plane out of my democratic, civilized country that is founded on peace, order and good government. This will be the warning to all that if you do not assimilate to western culture, western laws and ideals, you are not welcome here.

To add to the insult, I saw women in niqabs and burkas at the demonstration who didn’t go to the aid of that young woman. Sadly, I understand that too. They’ve been indoctrinated with a sense of inferiority, of nothingness. Their dress symbolizes their internalization of the fact that they have no equal rights, no civil rights and in their culture, no human rights.

Which leads me to ask: where are the voices of the feminists? Political activist and feminist, Judy Rebbick; and social activist Naomi Klein; and students of feminist ideology? Why have I not heard their voices decrying the treatment of one of their own at the hands and boots of men? Are they just too busy involved in issues of microaggression and “rape culture” which they declare is rampant on our campuses? Or do they only support downtrodden women-and at this event they were literally down-trodden-when their needs don’t clash with their pro-Palestinian stance?

I remember Elias Hazineh speaking in Toronto at the Al Quds Day last year calling for the killing of Jews in Jerusalem. “We say get out or you’re dead! We give them two minutes and then we start shooting. And that’s the only way that they will understand.” He wasn’t stopped. It was as if he were giving a weather report. As Ezra Levant just pointed out, those who don’t honour our constitution push the limits, checking like young children: how far can we go? We made an error the first time this Jew-hating behaviour popped up out of the sewers and we did not respond because we are more concerned about placating the politically correct than protecting our culture.

If Calgary does not come down hard on each of these provocateurs, and probe into the behaviour of the police, we will find ourselves claiming “shock” when our streets are overwhelmed like the streets of Paris:

Or with Jew haters running amok reprising Kristallnacht:

Senator Says He Had PTSD When He Wrote Thesis
..................................................................................................
ABC News ^ | July 23, 2014

Montana Sen. John Walsh's thesis written to earn a master's degree from the U.S. Army War College contains unattributed passages taken word-for-word from previously published papers.

The Democrat said Wednesday he was on medication and being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder from his service in Iraq when he wrote the paper. He said he also was dealing with the stress of a fellow veteran's recent suicide.

Walsh said he made an unintentional mistake and did not intend to plagiarize.

"I don't want to blame my mistake on PTSD, but I do want to say it may have been a factor," Walsh told The Associated Press. "My head was not in a place very conducive to a classroom and an academic environment."

IRS Lawlessness: 20 Hard Drives, Six Unanswered Questions

..................................................................................................
Investor's Business Daily ^ | July 24, 2014 | IBD EDITORIALS

Lois Lerner refuses to answer questions during a House Oversight Committee hearing into the IRS scandal on Capitol Hill on May 22, 2014. AP View Enlarged Image

Scandal:

An internationally accredited information-technology asset-management firm says the IRS has some explaining to do as our patience is taxed with tales of even more convenient computer crashes.

Private-sector organizations as vast as the Internal Revenue Service typically have redundancy built into their information technology systems, as secure record keeping is the key to managing their businesses and staying in business. Such records, if nothing else, are often required to be kept by law, and often by the IRS itself.

As we have noted, Lois Lerner's lost emails from the critical period when the IRS was serving as a political arm of the Obama administration and targeting Tea Party and other conservative groups suggest by themselves a conspiracy to obstruct justice as well as being a violation of the Federal Records Act, which requires paper copies of such critical emails to be printed and stored just in case of computer problems.

This conspiracy to obstruct justice is further suggested by some Lerner emails that she and the Obama administration wished had been lost — especially one sent by Lerner to a Maria Hooke.

"I had a question today about OCS," Lerner stated in the email. "I was cautioning folks about email, how we have had several occasions where Congress has asked for emails and there has been an electronic search for responsive emails — so we need to be cautious about what we say in emails."

OCS is the IRS' Office Communications Server, a form of online chat system that circumvents email.

When she learned that OCS messages were not set to automatically save, Lerner wrote, "Perfect."

Clearly Lerner had a keen interest in keeping her communications from Congress and the American people.

Lerner's hard drive allegedly crashed, which cannot be verified because her hard drive has since been destroyed and/or recycled. That questionable hard-drive direction came just 10 days after House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, the Republican from Michigan, first wrote a letter asking if the IRS was targeting nonprofit groups.

Now we learn, as reported by the Daily Caller, that IRS Deputy Associate Chief Counsel Thomas Kane said in transcribed congressional testimony that more IRS officials experienced computer crashes, bringing the total to "less than 20," also saying the agency does not know if these additional lost emails may be backed up somewhere.

On Monday, the International Association of Information Technology Asset Managers, which deals with such technical questions regarding computer hardware and record retention on a regular basis and which has reacted with the same incredulity as the rest of us, released a list of six basic questions the IRS needs to answer.

Three pioneering women in Marine infantry course are asked to leave. Why?

The three women who qualified for the Marine Corps's Infantry Officers Course were physically disqualified last week. No woman has successfully completed the course.

By Anna Mulrine, Staff writer / October 24, 2014
m.csmonitor.com

Just weeks after three women passed a rigorous day-long test qualifying them to potentially lead US Marine infantrymen for the first time in history, news came that all three women have been asked to leave the course.

They were physically disqualified from the training last week for falling behind in hikes while carrying loads of upwards of 100 pounds, says Maj. George Flynn, director of the Infantry Officers Course (IOC) at Quantico, Va.

Earlier this month, the women had successfully completed the Combat Endurance Test, the first hurdle Marines must pass to become infantry officers – the quintessential front-line combat job. That accomplishment qualified them for the remainder of infantry officer training, the IOC.

Under an order from the secretary of Defense, services must open all combat jobs to women by January 2016, or come back with a specific reason – backed by research – as to why not.

When they begin the 13-week IOC, officers are told that if they “fall out” of more than one “tactical movement” during their time in training, they will be asked to leave the school.

“That has always been IOC policy,” Major Flynn says.“The key part is not just to conduct a movement. You need to lead that moment, and you can’t do that if you’re falling out.”

The standard pace for “tactical movements” – otherwise known as hikes – at the IOC is about three miles per hour, he says.

During the first march in which the three female – as well as three male – officers were issued a warning, the Marines were given about two hours and 40 minutes to move 7-1/2 miles. At the time, they were assigned to carry roughly 104 pounds each.

If at any point one of the students falls 75 or 100 meters behind the unit, an instructor “will start walking with that Marine,” Flynn says. “We start sticking on them.”

The instructors ask: “Hey, where’s your unit right now? OK, you need to get up with them, because you’re not leading anyone from back here.”

From that point, the officers have about five minutes to start catching up. If they don’t, they are put in a truck.

Officers at the IOC say it’s a safety issue. If the unit gets strung out too far, it’s dangerous not to know where troops are.

The Marines are then told that if they fall behind to a similar degree again, they are out of the course.

“The class adviser pulls them aside and says, ‘That’s your one. You don’t get any more. Understand?’ ” Flynn says. “They’ve been counseled that they have failed a hike, and we don’t tolerate more than one failure of a tactical movement.”

That’s what happened last week, this time during a nine-mile march. The students had three hours to complete it, carrying 124-pound packs.

When three men and three women fell behind for a second time, Flynn had to break the news that they were out.

Retired Army Col. Ellen Haring, an advocate for women in combat, says that although the entire formation was supposed to complete the hike in three hours, it took most of the group closer to four hours.

“Despite the fact that none of them could keep the pace that was set that day, they were considered failures. But the whole unit failed to meet those parameters, not just those six people,” she says. “Who maintains the rate of the march?”

The Marines haven’t always been clear about the parameters for the course, says Greg Jacob, policy director for the Service Women’s Action Network.

At the enlisted training school, Mr. Jacobs, who served as a Marine, recalls that students were told they could walk no faster than three miles an hour, and every hour they had to take a 10-minute break.

In the IOC, “it’s up to the person in front to set the speed of the hike,” he says. “There doesn’t seem to be a standard around these movements.”

As a result, he adds, “it seems like the goal posts just keep moving.”

Colonel Haring argues that this is particularly tough for the women who are endeavoring to become infantry officers. “I’m sure all of these women did this course because they thought they could complete it,” she says.

On this point, Flynn agrees. “They are naturally upset, in the sense that they feel a little down and they think they could’ve done more,” he says. “Everyone’s been there: When you’re done with a situation, you find ways in your brain that you think you could’ve pushed a little harder here or there.”

Their fellow classmates, too, were “bummed out” by the news, he adds.

“These classes, naturally because of the shared duress and stress, they bond pretty quickly,” Flynn says. “Everyone is bummed out and feels bad, but there’s also the dynamic that the shared stress only gets worse if everyone can’t carry their weight.”

The women in the group, who must remain anonymous because they are officially US military test subjects, left the course saying they felt “positive,” Flynn says. “They said they got a lot out of it.”

“I told them that they are good officers and that they need to be going out and leading the Marines they have been assigned to lead – right now.”
