Val,

The Gardner brothers have a habit of pointing out that investors who buy SPDRs (AMEX:SPY for the S&P 500) have historically beat more than 75% of fund managers; more than 85% during the past decade and more than 95% during the past 3 years. And they don't even point out half the abuses of unitholders by the fund managers.

I've never seen the Gardners talk about Soft $, IPO spinning to private accounts or even trailer fees. Most mutual funds tend to be a means of transferring wealth rightfully should go to unitholders to various other constituencies. And as long as the general public remains uneducated or uninformed, this "theft" will continue.

Ian

Re: He is probably a bit upset with the Gardners (Motley Fool) because their view on investing is opposite of his (they prefere individual stocks)

This I don't understand though. If he doesn't like them, why would he have them stand in for him? I presume he's largely in sympathy with their views or he wouldn't have them. You don't ever see him bring in a stand in who touts Futures for example.
