John Malone is pushing the envelope. TCI's most likely partners will be AT&T, Compaq, Intel, Scientific Atlanta and Citibank. My guess is that John will select Sun's open Java system versus Gate's closed OS.

This will push the Americast coalition to speed up its own STB implementation plans ($1 billion plus contract for STBs with Zenith).

Malone is restricting himself to an HFC (hybrid, fibre-optic cable) model while Americast partners, using Zenith's "four-way" STBs, can go DBS, MMDS, terrestial or HFC, offering much more flexibility.

If Malone installs 25 million digital set tops, Zenith will earn about $125 million in VSBi licensing royalties and will sell one helluva lot of HDTV and SDTV sets to Malone's customers.

Thus, whether or not Zenith gets a piece of the TCI set-top box contract, ZE wins....
