What about Windows 98? zdnet.com

In the wake of Judge Jackson's temporary ruling against Microsoft, analysts unanimously called the ruling a potentially severe blow to the upcoming Windows 98 operating system. Rick Sherlund, a software-industry analyst at Goldman Sachs and Co., referred to the possibility that Microsoft may not be able to integrate its browser with Windows 98 as "a real lobotomy of the operating system." Although it's not yet clear exactly how Windows 98 will be affected, there is no question that browser integration is the key selling point in Windows 98.

Gratuitous insult: Sheesh, after the past few days I was thinking Windows95 was pretty well lobotomized the way it is, but maybe worse is in store for us.

Such scenarios depend on integration between the browser and the operating system, which has been threatened resoundingly by Judge Jackson's ruling. The smoke won't clear until a final ruling comes down in three months, but a long shadow has been cast over the next versions of Windows and Windows NT.

Well, NT5 doesn't have a ship date anymore, even for the next beta, so who cares. It's the OS for the next millenium. As for the OS formerly known as Windows 97, maybe if there was a technical argument for putting OS utility interfaces in the browser, as opposed to a "business is war" argument, Microsoft might have a case. I don't think "we have to do it to kill Netscape" will impress the judge much though.

Cheers, Dan.
