Bad spit? Guess so. It was very early in the morning and I hadn't brushed or even taken a drink of water yet. This time I'll wait an hour or so and make sure I don't have anything remaining in my mouth that would taint the sample. I'm in no hurry for this, so it's not a problem having to wait a bit longer.

My younger son's girlfriend is African American, and is interested in taking the test to see what her ancestry is. I need to research whether 23andme is better for that, or the one sold by Ancestry.com. Since she and my son are thinking about getting married, selfishly I'd rather she did 23andme, in case there are unhealthy genes. I never really thought about how hard it is for some people to not know their roots. My dad's genes are so common that I get contacted frequently by adopted people searching for their birth family. So far, they are so distantly related that I can't help them. I think I have mentioned that 23andme put paid to the family history that there was Native American blood on my father's mother's side, as well as the rumor that there was black blood on her side. Some on his father's side but not his mother's. Our cousin had been hitting brick walls on the Native American angle for years. Now we know why. Funny, though, my father's mother had the kind of cheekbones that made her look Native American, specifically, Cherokee. My father looked a lot like James Garner, whose mother was said to be half Cherokee. I wonder where the cheekbones came from?
