Do you have a HDD? If you do and I assume you do then everything is easy. Backward compatibility just give you the option to use the old format on the new device. Do you like Jaz2 is backward compatible?

I can even talk about forward compatibility... eg) h/w:CD-RW, s/w:0Paradox OPAL
