I think koan wants to be seen as progressive as possible and having a lesbian daughter would ensure his position. Being liberal or progressive is an important part of their self-image. They think it makes them smarter (part of the cognitive elite), better morally (compassionate), and spiritually enlightened. And superior to the average benighted American.
