Why I always use liberal. They knew in 1776 that slavery was wrong, yet it took another 150 years to get rid of it. Why? We all know the answer. I knew as a kid racism, sexism, genderism and brutality was wrong. And started fighting the establishment mores and norms on these subjects when I was 9. How is it a 9 year old would know more than society and adults? I certainly didn't know more. It really was a simple matter of the emperor has no clothes trip". It was all there for anyone to see. People just had to have the courage to say so. Here are a few of the things I noticed at 9. That is too young to have to fight injustice. 1) the YMCA had a policy of hitting (swatting) kids for fun). I have no idea what that was about. They did it during summer programs and at their camp on the eel river. It was stupid. When I protested (I was a good kid and did nothing wrong) they brought in a pastor to explain why I should go along with it. 9 is too young to have to take on adults doing stupid things. 2) Boys did not play with girls. I did, but I was good at sports and could get away with it. But there was pressure. I could see it was stupid not to play with the girls. 3) I never remember a time when I didn't think how stupid racism, sexism and genderism was. That one baffled me my whole life, especially as I could see how horrible it was for minorities. My heart always went out to them. And I have been in a rage over that my entire life, especially African American's. I still don't know how anyone can be so brutal? Racism is a terrible stupid thing. Why did people let it all go on so long? I am sure everyone knew sexism, racism and genderism was wrong, but no one would speak up. If they didn't know it then they were too stupid to even be allowed to drive, IMO. In the 60's we fought against all of these things. That was what bound us together. We hippies (liberals) knew racism, sexism etc were wrong. We all knew it and banded together to stop it. That shows how strong and defined the liberal personality is. I never saw any hippies who were racist, sexist or homophobic. But it was a lonely hard fight and we stuck together for strength. When I joined the counter culture movement I lost virtually all of my friends for a while. Shows how entrenched it all was and how tense the fight was.
