An Alabama man may have just experienced one of man's worst nightmares—he awoke from surgery stunned to find that his penis had been amputated. In a lawsuit he and his wife filed against a hospital and two doctors, Johnny Lee Banks Jr. says he'd gone in for a routine circumcision and was never warned about, nor did he consent to, penis removal being a possibility. And yet when he awoke his entire penis was gone, and he claims to have suffered through additional pain during a longer recovery as a result of the more expensive surprise procedure, reports al.com. Neither party will comment with the case in litigation, though a brief hospital statement reports that the hospital "intend[s] to defend all counts aggressively," according to the AP. The lawsuit claims defendants were negligent because they didn't consult another physician when problems arose during the circumcision, though it's unclear what those problems were. Wife Zelda Banks is also claiming loss of consortium given the couple's inability to have intercourse. At this point, the lawsuit isn't specifying how much is being sought in damages. (In a similar case, a doctor removed a man's penis to save his life, and a jury sided with the doc.)
