Things aren't going as well as they had hoped. Hamas has learned from what happened in Lebanon. There is a greater tendency for them to stand and fight instead of vanishing as soon as the an armored vehicle show up, for example. As a result the casualty rate for the IDF is higher than expected.

Yes, I have been surprised at IDF's casualty rate. It wasn't supposed to be this way. However, I think the Israelis have had some inkling that this time might different. They seemed very reluctant to push forward.

Israelis are starting to worry about mission creep. This was only supposed to last a week or so. Now it is slowly creeping towards a re-occupation. And to re-occupy Gaza is going to cause a lot of people to die.

Yeah, definitely.........you can tell they don't want to reoccupy Gaza. Given all the tunnels, I think another occupation could be very deadly for the IDF.

The hardliners wanted this. Just like they wanted Lebanon. This could be it for their influence. Might not. Probably not. But...

You tend to be more optimistic than I. I think the power of Likud and the even further right parties is gaining in Israel. The country seems split. Tel Aviv/Haifa is still the economic capital but the political power of Jerusalem and the settlements is very much in the ascendant IMO.
