Doesn't have to fit all - first time with a dictionary?

No. I am really familiar with them. You, OTOH...

In a dictionary you have the top definition, which is the one the editor putting the dictionary together feels is the most common usage. Then one or more secondary definitions follow it, showing other usages.

My post, however was not a dictionary entry. But a collection of top line entries from several dictionaries. Each editor has slightly different levels of specifying the meaning of the phrase. So the best technique is to read all of them and take the general thrust of them.

You keep bringing a spoon to a gun fight. Do you ever learn?
