Maybe. But from a time when there isn't that much written history on which to rely, you don't just throw it all out. People who are interested in figuring out what actually happened rely heavily on religious writings. While imperfect, in many cases they're the most reliable resources available.

The difficult task is to figure out what is meaningful and what isn't. If you take the story of the Flood literally you might question it; but when you consider that religious documentation from civilizations around the world reported the event in some fashion or form, something DID happen. The precise details of it, no one knows.

It was probably a result of Climate Chaos from an excess of CO2 in the atmosphere.
