1. Increasing the die size of the CPU impacts clock speed. Floor planning and routing become less efficient. Clock skews increase. The pad ring requires longer routes. All global wiring potentially requires longer routes. Power consumption is increased. All of these factors cause the CPU to run at a lower clock speed.

The largest x86 CPU on the market right now is running at the fastest clock speed.

2. 3-D graphics/audio/modem/etc do not require 200-300MHZ clock speeds. The fastest 3-D graphics cards run off a 33MHz PCI bus. 3-D graphics performance is ultimately limited by memory bandwidth, not clock speed. A well designed PCI graphics chip with a next generation RAMBUS port to the frame buffer will be blazingly fast.

RAMBUS is going to be very expensive for some time. The MXi will have a 2GB/sec. memory bandwith using the relatively cheap and plentiful SDRAM. Oh yeah, and its die size is 90mmý.

RE: buying IDTI

I don't know. At $800M, it doesn't seem very cheap to me. Intel doesn't need another x86 product and the other large companies with x86 cross-licenses have no interest in competing with Intel.

IDTI and the Winchip will succeed or fail on their own merits/execution.

BTW, why don't you run the buyout idea by the shareholders on the Intel thread? It would be interesting to hear what they think of the idea.

Where are these C6's? I haven't seen any at computer shows yet. Maybe be they are all being eaten up by Taiwan notebook makers?

You are getting too excited by Intel so-called technology achievements and C6 small die size. C6 is a 486DX with MMX and larger L1 cache with 64-bit data path.

May I suggest you to read the Mxi presentation at:
cyrix.com

Once the 128-bit Mxi hits the street during 2H/98, all the current x86 MPUs, including PII, M2 or K6, will immediately become yesterday technology as 386DX today.

Cyrix has learned a painful lesson, if not a fatal one, in clock speed. Mxi might give the PC world another surprise on the clock speed.
