The Argentina default seemed to coincide with the severe equity market decline and the unusual reaction in the bond market to that decline.

Although the effects are likely largely localized to Argentina, what we don't know are the derivative contract positions that might be tied to that event. A large financial entity on the opposite side of the planet could be affected forcing them to raise cash. The entire global financial system is so fragile that you never know how large the real affect is and whether it could be the first domino that starts the stampede.
