In my chart of margin percentages, I mistakenly characterized it as nonlinear. However, in examining it more closely, I find it is completely linear! The reason for the apparently accelerated deterioration below 60% equity is that the line intercepts the axis at 30% equity, since that is where the margin calls occur (in a diversified account).
