Al,

You ask the same question I'm sure many of us have in the back (or front) of our minds, re: Nextel's drop. I try to piece together some scenario out of the information I have on Nextel through public news, personal (ancedotal) experiences from people I know using the phones, and from discussions here. The stock may be dropping due to 1) overall market (especially Nasdaq) weakness, 2) sympathy to a knock-down Friday for Qualcomm, 3) "non-investment" dumping of the stock (some remarks made here indicate that Wendy ex-McCaw is selling), 4) portfolio selling year-end to lock in an impressive Nextel gain, and 5) some negative insider information which may soon be released. I'm not too concerned about investment analyst comments (wouldn't it be interesting to do a study to see how many analysts were "yea" or "nea" on industry giants in their start-up days? IBM, Xerox, Microsoft, etc.)

The only possibility which bothers me is #5. By definition, I have no insight into that possibility. We can guess what bad news could mean: e.g., low subscriber numbers. Some people here feel that the subscriber "A.D."s will be higher than than public targets; I tend to side with that thought. But, we'll have to wait a month to know.

I try to stay current on Nextel and industry news which affects my investment decision, and review my reasons for buying periodically. )AT&T did a great confirmation of the Nextel plan this last week). I'd say nothing has changed to negatively affect my belief in the company and the management.

I have personally talked to friends and workers who have used or trial-demoed the phone. Most liked it a lot (one thought it was too big compared to the present cell phone he uses, but the new Galaxy model should help there). To be fair, I have read some reports on the Usernet which say they get bad reception and/or customer service with Nextel. I do not know how old their experience is. We have seen a few regions addressed here.

It seems like as the Direct Connect story becomes more well known, that this network will have an even easier time selling. Also, add data transfer capability and other uses which are envisioned for the near future, and the revenue could really grow.

Friday, I bought more of this stock at 22 1/2. I believe in it. If a time comes when there is solid information that paints a negative future for this company, I will re-evaluate. For now, I don't see it.

(Al, wake up. I know this turned into a long message).

Have a great week,

Merry Christmas, All
Rob

Al, the whole wireless sector has been beaten up pretty badly.
I'm really surprised to see Motorola under 60. They have a big
investment in Asia, though, so it's probably attributable to
that. Nextel really doesn't have much to do with Asia, so it
is surprising it hasn't been stronger. Airtouch, which is still
the 800 pound gorilla, has held up much better. Of course,
their earning are much better than Nextel's. Still, Nextel's
growth seems much more impressive (in early '96 they only had
like 20,000 digital subscribers). It seems like a takeover
rumor is the only thing that could drive Nextel's price toward
it's true value. We've lost 9 points after producing the most
ads of any carrier. Maybe we just need a good NASDAQ rally.

Al, my $$ has not been sitting idle for over a year as you suggest. As recently as early June NXTL was under 15. From there to 22.5 is 50%. Granted, we had 32 for a time but 50% is better than a cd.

I'll repeat what I've said umpteen times: NXTL has shown a seasonal pattern in the recent past (since MCI dumped its shares). With the exception of last year when it bottomed in December, the stock bottoms in late January, early February.

This year we're feeling a tital wave of nasdaq slopover. The baby (NXTL) is gettng thrown out with the bath water. No right thinking insider is causing this downdraft and, for heavens sake, look at a weekly chart. There's no heavy selling going on. But it doesn't take volume for a stock to go down - just a lack of buying - which is exactly what has happened.

Al, it's frustrating buying a stock and watching it go down. I know, it happened when I bought Nextel in January. It went down 20% in the first 3 months. I felt awful, my first sizable stock purchase was going down the tubes, and I didn't know why.

I was so sick about it, I couldn't even check the price on a daily bases. Then seemingly out of nowhere in June it spiked up, and continued up to 32.

Yes, it is difficult to watch it slide down, but i'm focusing in on the big picture. Nobody can predict the market's short term movement on a consistant basis, certainly not me. But the overall picture (Arnie call's them fundos) looks better today than they did in July, and that's what's important.

Unless something undpredicted happens, i'm not selling my shares for less than 100. Whether it takes 3, 4 or 5 more years, I don't care (well 3 years would be nice). When Nextel hits 100 i'll have a 7 bagger (almost), a damn nice return for someone who thinks the Bullinger Band plays at the Hard Rock Cafe.

So hang in there, keep the faith, I want to enjoy the ride up with you and every else here. 1998 WILL BE A BUST OUT YEAR!!!
