Ted,
On a broader note, this country doesn't want to deal with the immigration issue........doesn't want to look at the overall problem.........doesn't want to take the steps necessary to ease the problem. And I say ease because so long as their are haves and have nots in this world, the have nots are going to try to move to where the haves are.
Most of us get the fact that the "have-nots" are going to move where the "haves" are.

The reactions to that vary widely, but IMO fall into one of four categories:

1) Don't come here. No Vacancy. This is our land, and you're trespassing. (This is the typical reaction of right-wingers, especially the racist kind.)

2) If you're going to come here, do so legally. Take a number and get in line like everyone else trying to come here. (This is the typical reaction of moderates.)

3) Please do come here. But don't settle near where I live. Go settle over there. We'll spend the tax dollars (i.e. other people's money) necessary for your food and shelter. (This is the typical reaction of left-wing elitists.)

4) Please do come here, and stay with us. Help yourself to our food and shelter. It's the least we can do for our fellow brothers and sisters in humanity. (This is the typical reaction of religious organizations like the Catholic Church.)
