I remember driving around Bakersfield looking at the earthquake damage, and the R convention was on the radio. "Caissons go rolling" came on.
"Why?"
"Eisenhower was a general, and that's the army song."
"Cool; I like Ike"
"We're for Stevenson"
"I like Ike". Hey, I wasn't gonna be 8 for another few months. In '56, it was "Ike and Dick make us sick".

Bob Mathias, 30 minutes down the road, was the World's Greatest Athlete.

In the fall of '52, Gov. Earl Warren came home to Bakersfield to open the county fair. I mostly remember the Marine Honor Guard. Splendid uniforms when you are 8. Fair grounds was across the street from my new school. Old one was condemned cuz of the quake, so we were bused across town for half-day sessions.
Lots of flies. We had killing contests in class, using rubber bands.
