Oh my gosh, you must be young. Inflation was running in the double digits and interest rates were in the teens!!! Can you imagine buying a house and having to borrow money at such a rate? Now to be fair to Carter, some of this was out of his hands (oil prices), but he had no idea of what to do to control what at the end of his presidency was a completely out of control economy.

BTW Jeff, it is no secret that that is why he lost to Reagan.

I always thought the 70's / 80's inflation was due to LBJ's "guns and butter" policy?

Now to Carter, the other side of Krugmans argument. Jobs mushroomed in Carters early term - but that is all part of the awful mess that led to runaway inflation.
