Boy, MY body was tired by the time I got to Diablo Lookout, after a hike of 5 1/2 miles and elevation gain of 1500 to 2000 feet. Actually, I cheated. I started walking about 7 pm Saturday August 9, got in about two miles before it got dark, and then bivouacked by a big boulder that was on the edge of the 2012 burn. I spent the night huddled up to that boulder. Had to light a little fire in a notch of the boulder to keep warm. The next day I got to the lookout about 10 am.

That trail is longer and steeper than it was in 1962 when I was the paid lookout on Diablo. Now I am doing this as a volunteer, and it is well worth the trouble.

I'm back now, trying to rest up from a pretty rigorous two weeks. The previous week I was on Salmon Mountain lookout, which is only a 1.5 mile hike, but it is higher than Diablo. Diablo is only 7500 feet elev. and Salmon Mountain is 9000 feet.
