Between say 1850 and the present there were vast swatches of land that traded hands as a result of force.

A big factor in WWI was how best to carve up the Ottoman Empire. After the war, they decided that was a bad idea and wars of conquest were outlawed. Not everyone agreed. In the wake of WWII, they at least made a show of not redrawing borders with the exception of the USSR and the ongoing mess of Africa. Even the USSR kept more of Eastern Europe's borders stable.

Since that time, most unstable borders have been breakaway republics.
