Potentially, SI will get paid by companies whose logo is displayed. It's sleazy to add a logo on SI, but Nasdaq does it. There are anti-AAPL boards, so I suppose the moderator could create a satirical logo. The answer to your question is money.

SmoothSail: re: Why was this done?

I can't wait to hear the answer to that question.

Hmmmm .... Maybe a first-time visitor to the site will get all jazzed about being able to display a logo on a subject page, then decide to buy a lifetime membership?

Yeah, maybe so.

Did SI gain some kind of competitive advantage over similar investment forums by doing this?

I'm wondering how many loyal SI users requested these "enhancements", and which other "enhancements" have been requested by them.

What is the process being used to determine which "enhancements" take precedence over others?

Sure is a pretty day.

What I don't like about it (other than what has already been mentioned) is that apparently moderators are not given a choice. Every thread I have bookmarked has had this inconvenient ugliness imposed upon it.

They sure do like to fiddle with random stuff, rather than address numerous important issues that have been raised.

It has become blatantly obvious that they could care less about the members. It's just their own personal playground.
