That doesn't help the first-time visitor who stops in to see what SI is all about.

1) The default display shows amateurish graphics, which could cause him to exit immediately.
2) There is no help to tell them how to turn off the graphics
3) Even if there was help, they couldn't turn off the graphics because they're not logged in.

You should give a lot of thought to the first-time user's experience.

You DO want them to come back, right?

Sure is a pretty day.

I understand but in your image, the boxes left and right could very easily be one line each at the top (or bottom) of the thread's header space and then "moderator's content" either below or above. That would save a couple inches.

If your right box was one line at the top of the page, you could still include all the info without taking up space. Likewise the box on the left, if you did not include your new "moderator defined thread image".

JMO....
