Dave, many scientific fields are literally exploding, because of three things:

1. There are more scientists alive and working today than in all of human history.

2. Computers and automation have amplified what they can do, and the experiments they can perform.

3. The internet puts their results up almost as they happen, so other researchers can use the results.

It's a new day in science.
