In turn they raise another generation to succeed as they did. The fact so few black males have the education to get hired is not societies fault. Black culture as it is today is a complete mess - success starts in the individual. Just like Asian, Indian and other groups in America - they do not allow a culture of failure and blame to run their lives - they struggle to succeed. They don't riot in the streets - destroying their own neighborhoods. I used to believe that... but in a country where African-Americans have been given the short end of the stick in pretty much every way... If I had grown up in a house where I went to bed hungry every night, went to a school that lacked intact textbooks, even if my parents could afford to get married it wouldn't matter because one who was in jail, had no real means to get around, knew pretty much no one who had any employment connections, could be frisked at any time, was less likely to be hired because of my name or skin color, was ten times as likely to go to jail for the same crimes, etc... there's no way I would've made it. Anyone who can succeed despite a background like that is made of stronger stuff than 99.9% of people... given my own background -- my family was at least in the top half of income earners for most of my childhood and probably always at least above the bottom quartile, I went to an pricey private school for nine years, my father's friend hired me for a high school job and my mom's best friend was connected to an office that gave me my start, we almost always had two cars, and the police were almost always friendly when they ever came through the neighborhood... I feel pretty lucky. And, on the same note, having been involved with philanthropists for a long time, I see a ton of kids who have no chance of ever running out of resources no matter how little they do with their lives... We live in a country where at least a billion of people have lived since its inception and we had just over 40 Presidents, one man who had only 80,000 descendants had six who ended up being President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lothropp) another ten or so who were close blood relations with another (with the wife of a former President the likely next one and the son and brother of one likely among the strong challengers) -- something is clearly out of whack. People's opportunities are VASTLY different; lots of people start out inexorably behind the 8-ball while others start up 6 balls... The former basically can't win unless he's a miracle worker. -Z
