Sort of mirrors the claim of walking while black. - Not good for the officer.

That's a shame. I would have been better if he'd known Brown and Johnson had just stolen some stuff and roughed up a store clerk. While the officer didn't know, it makes sense to think Brown and Johnson would have thought he'd know about the incident and likely thought they were about to be arrested.
