I could look this up but maybe you can tell me quicker.

What is the current ratio between the interest payments on U. S. federal debt and the federal income?

If interest rates move only slightly in the direction of what has been normal and average since the country came into existence, debt service costs will double. When debt service costs exceed total national income, the country will be automatically in default.

What happens after that, I have no idea. Except I look forward to hearing some very fanciful new terminology to replace words like "broke," "bankrupt," "deadbeat," "worthless," and so on that are customarily applied to human beings who get into a similar situation.
