In my local paper, via Washington Post: Seoul South Korea, panic moved from South Korean stock markets to the supermarkets over the weekend as people rushed to hoard staple foods. Kim Dae Jung, a leading candidate in Thursday's presidential election, declared in a TV debate with his rivals that the country is facing its "biggest crisis since the war." Since Friday, thousands of people have mobbed Kim's Club, Seoul's equivalent of the Price Club buying up the giant discount store's entire stock of sugar and flour. Frantic to snap up imported goods whose prices are beginning to soar after the country's currency collapse, shoppers also bought 30% more bathroom tissue and 20% more noodles than usual. .....The scene in markets and food stalls reflected the gloom and anxiety as the ramifications of the financial turmoil begin to sink in. As more Koreans believe this storm will not blow over quickly, they are digging in for tough times. They are starting to realize that many of their hard-won gains in living standards may be gone. The article is a little longer, but you can get the picture.
