SGI's new R12000 chip was favorably reviewed in Jan. issue of BYTE -- a magazine not noted for postive statements on SGI for several years. They estimate 50% improvement in performance over the R10000, and stated it could beat any next-generation Intel chips for high-end graphics use. They preduct volume production of the chip in the first half of 1998.

Anybody know when next earnings report comes? Sometime around Jan 18th or so?

I take issue with statements in this thread about "Supercomputer companies can't earn any money." I think SGI's scalable models offer a unique opportunity to build momentum in this field. I also think the workstation and server story is far from over.

think SGI is really 'burning cash', would I?>>

Alexis, let's revisit this issue after Q2 earnings release. Who knows? Maybe they'll *double* their cash again in spite of even more loses.
Amazing.
