ISO containers offer third market for LNG
International LNG traders earn about $160 billion annually from the export
of ocean cargos. Inreasingly, LNG-fueled transportation also represents
a viable and growing market. This article examines a third market,
intermodal container trade, and some of the proponents behind it.
Analysis from Zeus Intelligence 4is-cnmi.com

I wonder whose making these containers?
Chart Industries (GTLS) is one. chartindustries.com

TAL International Group, Inc. (TAL)

I recently bought TAL who is the largest container owner and transporter in the world. They move and own all types of containers but looking at their Web site, I see no mention of LNG containers only "fuel/chemical" containers. If/when containerized LNG is deemed a big enough market, I would expect TAL to be a major player. They already work w/ certain large customers where they provide a "custom" turnkey service using long term contracts that provide lease back terms for their specialized containers along w/ fixed transportation/delivery schedules and terms.

It looks like up to 3 of the LNG containers can be stacked when transported on a container vessel.

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (CLNE)

The Clean Energy California LNG Plant is a subsidiary operation owned by Clean Energy Fuels Corp. This probably is the facility that originated the first delivery of containerized LNG to Hawaii.

The company is know for T. Boone Pickens (a large investor/owner w/ 20% ownership) who is the spokesman for LNG trucks and fuel stations in the U.S..

The key in my view to make this a profitable venture is to obtain long term delivery contracts w/ the Utilities and/or Municipalities. It's only now an emerging market and somewhat profitable. If/when one or more of the larger pipeline/transporters and/or major oil companies decide to enter this market, it will only continue to be a "niche" business. I just have not seen either yet servicing this small niche market.
