We got credit cards with chips before we went, and used our credit cards for almost everything- except in mom and pop shops in which we didn't want them to have to pay the service charge. It's quite easy to get a card with a chip- AMEX couldn't get them to us fast enough, and overnighted them to us, even though I got them way in advance and there was no hurry. Also got one from Citibank. Used both- no problems anywhere except at one supermarket (Albert Heijn)- and they don't take any foreign credit cards because of cost issues.

How odd that you posted this article.

This weekend I met a young student in Barnes and Noble who had just completed some kind of study abroad program in Russia--St. Petersburg specifically. She was surprised to find no usage of credit cards there. Only cash and checks were allowed.

Then she finished off her trip with 2 days in Helsinki and found only cards with chips were allowed. So it was back to checks and/or cash.

The lack of credit card usage in Russia really surprised me!
