Just got my July/August electric bill...Avg temp here in NJ was 72. More importantly, my bill was $2.20 thanx to my 12 kwh solar panel system. Two & half years in, I am on pace to recoup my capital cost (subsidised) in just under 8 years....I've been told that panel life is ~ 25 years. Sharpening my axe for the wood pile this weekend.

I'm not talking about the birds, the delta smelts and the whatever turtles - every large-scale method of energy production is going to have extraneous issues like that. I have no patience for the folks that attempt to use minor stuff like that to delay or block projects.

I'm talking about significant externalities with real economic cost to others. Look at the smog in China - only now are they acknowledging that their lack of regulation of emissions is causing significant harm. That's what happens if you simply let "the market" regulate electricity production. The same for the food supply - would you feed your dog Chinese dogfood? I know I wouldn't. The few companies that cut corners have harmed the whole industry. The same has happened with Indian generic drug manufacturers.
