Text of Darrell's reference: (NYSE: LU) and Orckit Communications (Nasdaq: ORCTF) have been jointly selected by The Netherlands' PTT Telecom to provide FastInternet local access solutions for a technical trial of broadband services to the home. The trial, which is already in progress and will run until May 1998, provides 1,000 subscribers in the Amsterdam area with broadband access to the Internet and video on demand services. Lucent and Orckit have integrated Orckit's FastInternet DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer) into PTT Telecom's network infrastructure, providing an end-to-end system that allows the PTT to offer high-bandwidth services over its existing copper wire infrastructure. The two companies are also working with Internet service provider Surfnet, and NOB, the Dutch National Broadcasting Production Organisation, which specialises in providing a broad variety of interactive and multimedia services such as video on demand (VOD) services via Internet Protocol (IP). More than 200 customers of PTT Telecom have already been connected to the trial, and the remaining participants are expected to be connected over the next few months. PTT Telecom is the fifth major telephone company in Europe to select Orckit's equipment for ADSL trials, and the current trial builds on an existing cooperation under which Lucent and Orckit are delivering HDSL (high bit rate digital subscriber line) solutions to PTT Telecom. "Lucent sees ADSL access technology being integrated into a wide range of its data and access products," said Aart Strang, Lucent Technologies' account director for PTT Telecom. "By working with Orckit we can rapidly provide our customers with high-quality, integrated network solutions." Orckit's FastInternet system combines rate adaptive 8Mbit/s ADSL modems, Ethernet and ATM interfaces, line concentration, maximum security provisions and traffic control. ADSL is a transmission technique that allows multi-megabit data transfer on regular telephone wires. Orckit Communications develops, manufactures and markets a wide range of high-speed local loop communications systems, including HDSL, ADSL, SDSL (symmetric digital subscriber line) and VDSL (very high bit rate digital subscriber line). Orckit is an active participant in many standards bodies concerning ADSL. Dan Arazi, executive VP marketing and sales, is on the board of directors of the ADSL forum, and Nigel Cole, VP new business development, is the chair of the technical committees of the ADSL forum.
